Fashion designer and Rosewood Placemaker Philip Huang is shaping the future of tradition in Phuket.
Founded by former engineer and model Philip Huang and co-founder and creative director Chomwan Weeraworawit in 2016, the partners (in business and life) produce clothing that merges traditional savoir-faire from artisans of Northeast Thailand with versatile, modern clothing design that using plant-based natural dyes, organic fibers and hand-made textiles and accessories favoured by the likes of Tilda Swinton and Palme d’Or winning director Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
The art of Sanotik Batik textiles, found in the southern province of Thailand, is, a product of the Islamic population which makes up 35% of Phuket. Originating in Java, Indonesia, and arriving together with Muslim immigrants to Thailand, this craft has been passed on for generations and plays a central role in ancient storytelling.
